The Apple iPhone 5 will be released into a far different market than its predecessor. The smartphone world is now filled to the brim with high-end touchscreen devices, all of which offer something, a niche, but just how does this new iPhone stack up against some of the more high-end devices which are on the horizon?
To get a view of the competition we’ve been holding the iPhone 5 up against some of the great and the good, and this time around it’s the turn of Sony’s Xperia V.

The iPhone 5 maintains Apple’s commitment to the Retina Display marketing angle with a 4-inch LED-backlit IPS TFT screen operating at 640 x 1136 and offering a pixel density of 326PPI.
Visuals from the display look impressively sharp and colours appear warm and lifelike.
The device’s screen is also protected by a scratch and oil-resistant Gorilla Glass coating.
The Sony Xperia V sports a 4-3-inch 720P TFT screen which operates at a resolution of 720 x 1280 and offers up a pixel density of 342PPI.
The screen also boasts new sensor-on-lens technology which reduces the amount of layers and also attenuates glare and interference, and Sony has also packed in its BRAVIA 2 engine for some extra visual witchcraft.

Camera

The iPhone 5 sports an 8-megapixel iSight primary camera which features LED flash, autofocus, simultaneous HD movie and still capture, geo-tagging, face detection, panorama and HDR.
The device is able to capture 1080P video at 30 frames per second too, and offers video stabilisation and a video light too, so you can capture in low-light.
The secondary camera is a 1.2-megapixel which may not be great but it's a step-up from the VGA FaceTime offering featured on the iPhone 4S.
Sony’s Xperia V sports a 13-megapixel primary camera which benefits from LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face & smile detection, 3D sweep panorama and image stabilisation.
The Xperia V can also capture 1080P video at 30 frames per second, with continuous autofocus, video light and video stabilisation.
The device’s secondary camera is a VGA.

Apple’s iOS operating system hasn’t changed much since it was introduced with the original iPhone. It’s extremely simple to pick-up, looks good and offers a no nonsense approach to mobile productivity, with virtually every sensible feature a user could ask for streamlined into the OS without the need for tweaking.
The newest version of the OS features some great new upgrades too, such as Apple’s own ‘Maps’ which offers 3D mapping and voice controlled turn-by-turn navigation, VIP mailbox, which allows users to select important contacts and have their email sent through to the device’s lockscreen, and Passbook, a simple but effective new e-ticketing solution.
The Xperia V runs on Android 4.0.4, or Ice Cream Sandwich, and this nearly up-to-date iteration of the platform is great for newbies and seasoned smartphone geeks alike. It offers some great core apps in Gmail, Google Maps and Google Currents – a great social magazine app which aggregates your chosen news sources together into a readable publication.
The operating system also offers users access to the excellent Google Play Store which has tons of apps, games, widgets and music and movies too – so you’ll never be at a loss for something to do when you’re on the move.

Apple has largely retained the same design used for its previous iPhone 4 and 4S in the iPhone 5. Users can look forward to a taller, slimmer device though, as the new smartphone hosts a larger screen than previously offered.
The Xperia V is a well-crafted device too, though not the thinnest on the market, but when you factor in that it’s IP57 certified dust and water resistant (up to 1 meter for 30 minutes max.) the extra bulk becomes less of a downside.

The Xperia V is powered by the dual-core ‘Krait’ S4 chip from Qualcomm, which is clocked to 1.5GHz, and it also offers Adreno 225 graphics, 1GB RAM, 8GB of on-board storage and support for micro SD cards up to 32GB in capacity – giving it one heck of a solid drive-train.
Users can look forward to smooth, responsive performance if demonstrations prove to be accurate, and gaming should be a great on the device thanks to its ample RAM and solid GPU.
The iPhone 5 is powered by Apple’s A6 chip, a new piece of silicon which the maufacturer developed based upon a custom crafted ARMv7, but there are no technical details available for the chip yet, so we can only judge it based on Apple’s claims that it will offer twice the performance of the A5 and a bunch more graphical chops.
The device features 1GB RAM though, which is a nice upgrade from previous models, and will be available in 16, 32 and 64GB flavours too, but there will be no support for removable memory sources.
